In a significant milestone, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) star Abhishek Sharma has etched his name into the annals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) history by surpassing an iconic record previously held by Indian cricketing maestro Virat Kohli.

The 23-year-old prodigy has set a new benchmark for the most number of sixes in a single IPL season by an Indian player, achieving this feat during SRH’s encounter against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 69 of IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. This remarkable accomplishment not only highlights Sharma’s explosive batting prowess but also cements his status as one of the most dynamic young talents in the tournament.

Abhishek surpassed Kohli’s record with a towering six off Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the second innings, sending the ball over long-on for an 82-metre hit. This maximum marked his 39th six of the season, surpassing Kohli’s 38 sixes set during the 2016 edition.

Despite losing his opening partner Travis Head on the first ball, Abhishek took charge and propelled his team towards a strong start. His explosive innings left SRH at 129/3 after 10.1 overs, chasing a formidable target of 215.

Abhishek also surpassed his previous best season tally of 426 runs, achieved in the 2022 edition. With 467 runs from 13 innings, he now averages 38.91 with an impressive strike rate of 209.41. His season’s haul includes 39 sixes and 35 fours, along with three half-centuries.
