Australia and Pakistan squared off with each other in the first game of the three-match Test series. The match took place at the Optus Stadium in Perth and it saw hosts dominance all over the four days of the game that lasted.
Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. It was a sensational outing for them with the bat as they posted a gigantic total of 487 runs on the board. David Warner was the chief architect behind the carnage as he ended with a blistering knock of 164 runs that set the tone for the team.
Mitchell Marsh in the middle order played aggressively and made sure that he scored run quickly. However, it was a heartbreak for him as he perished for 90 runs. Travis Head (40), Steve Smith (31) and Alex Carey (34) also chipped in as Australia ended with 487 runs on the board. Debutant Aamer Jamal was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan as he bagged a five-wicket haul.
Pakistan were off to a decent start with the bat as Abdullah Shafique (42) and Imam-ul-Haq (62) negotiated the tricky phase well and gave a good start to the team. Skipper Shan Masood (30) played well but after that, nothing went their way as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for just 271 runs.
Australia extended their lead as they posted 233 runs on the board in the second innings. Usman Khawaja (90) was the top run-scorer whereas Steve Smith (45) made a vital contribution. The host bowlers then were all over the Pakistan batters as they didn’t let them settle at all in the chase and put them under tremendous pressure. No batter couldn’t get going at all as they looked clueless against the fiery pace attack and lost wickets in clusters.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood did the damage with the new ball and put Pakistan on backfoot. The duo picked three wickets each whereas skipper Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon also chipped in. Australia bundled out opposition for just 89 runs and registered a mammoth win of 360 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The next game between the teams will be a boxing day game, set to be played on 26th December at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
